Can you lay stone tile right over an acrylic shower floor? What about right over laminate counter?

I’m thinking about laying stone tile as flooring in my acrylic shower for my master bedroom.

I’m also thinking about laying the stone tile as a counter top in my guest bath. It has laminate right now.

Can I lay the stone right on top of these surfaces? Here is the link of the type of stone tile I want to use: http://www.stratastones.net/

    Whoa!!! I can see you know nothing about laying stone! This has been a most pleasant and useful hobby of mine for the last 20 years. Stone adds such insulating power to walls, floors but I can’t see using it for a counter top. The only way to secure stone is to mortar it to a rough surface; this rules out acrylic floors and countertops.
    When laying stone or tile for a shower floor, you need to mortar it to either a concreted surface or to concrete board which is produced just for this reason. I have tiled our shower from the top of the acrylic floor to the ceiling. We used concrete board behind the tile. We installed an acryllic bottom of a molded shower which reached 3 feet high and I am glad that I didn’t try to tile the floor of the shower. The acrylic is easier to keep clean and provides seating on two sides of the shower. Stone and tile are great, but they need to be installed next to a concrete surface, or the mortar will not stick.

    No and No. They won’t stay there.

    For the countertop, you could cover the top with hardibacker or the like and put the tile on that, but you would probably be better off removing the countertop and replacing it with a properly built sub base for the stone tile.

    You cannot lay tile on the acrylic shower base. There is no process that will make that work. You will need to remove the acrylic shower base and replace it with a poured shower pan that you can then lay tile on or with a shower pan that is designed to accept tile.

    Im a tile setter,You have to get thinset and 1/2 inch hardiboard for the floor,spread the thin set than screw it every 6 inches. counter top same procedure just use 1/4 inch

    I agree, No & NO. I can’t think of anything less suitable for a shower floor or counter top! Think of your health…GERMS, MOLD, BACTERIA love a bathroom and anything stone will be difficult to keep clean and maintain. Surely you can come up with something more suitable and appealing for your guest bathroom.
