Does granite countertops scratch easily?

We recently renovated our kitchen and got granite countertops and my mom gets really annoying with her potholders! She puts a potholder under everything! Do they even scratch that easily and crack? You can’t even put a bowl on the counter and she’ll get mad if theres not a potholder underneath?
Is this necessary?

    After we had ours installed the guy threw his keys across it to demonstrate it’s durability – it was the best thing he could have done as I was instantly relaxed about it – however he did warn me against dragging earthenware type dishes etc across it as this will scratch it (You know, like the underside of a home made pottery item). I always use a pot holder underneath a hot pan or baking dish. – we have had ours in for about 3 years now and it still looks great (ours is kind of black in colour) – I only ever wipe it down with a damp cloth and if I want to buff it I dry it off after with a tea towel.
    That said – as it’s your Mum who probably paid for it – you must respect her guidelines – they are a pretty expensive item.

    no it’s not necessary with granite. it will not scratch easily and is able to withstand high temperatures. the only warning is don’t spill red wine on it. granite is very pourous.

    I have a granite counter that does scratch easily. It also stains very easily even from clear water even though I keep it sealed as recommended (and the granite isn’t a light color) and I was also told to protect it from heat.

    If your mom is concerned about damage best to be obvious about your caution when using the counter. Protect the surface so that if there is a scratch or a spot you won’t be blamed. :) At least you know what to get mom for Mother’s Day … POT HOLDERS! :)

    No, it’s not necessary. Granite is about the hardest countertop surface you can get (quartz is a bit harder). You just want to avoid using the countertop as a cutting board. You may put some scratches in it with a knife blade. And, it will certainly dull your knives.

    You also may want to avoid scrubbing with cleanser or a scrubbing pad. It may cause the surface to dull a bit, but I’m not sure (and not about to try it). But, I’ve had granite counter tops for years and I don’t put anything under pans, unless they’re especially hot. But, I’ve heard that this is not even a concern with granite (I just don’t want to find out the hard way).

    I’ve been a stone counter top fabricator for nine years. I agree with Paul in San Diego,
    granite is tough. The cutting blades we use to cut and shape it have little pieces of diamond in them (diamond is the hardest material there is).
    As for heat, I would be careful putting hot pans on it. During fabrication, we hone the edges with silicon carbide “grinding stones” and we’re careful not to dwell too long on any one area because the heat produced can burn the stone, making the crystals in it pop and appear white.
