Has anyone put self stick tiles over a floor that is not flat?

My mom needs to re-do her bathroom floor. She bought the self sticking tiles but when she pulled up the carpet the old lineoleum is not flat, it has ridges etc. to look like real stone flooring. She is going to try an etching compound to see if that will take it away. I was just wondering if you put the sticky tiles down on top will you be able to tell the floor wasn’t smooth?

      Yes, the new tiles will eventually pick up all the contours of whatever is underneath them, and they’ll look awful. You can buy some stuff called embossing leveler which fills in all these little patterns on the old floor. It’s easy to use. Home Depot has it. You’ll need a metal scraper to apply it, and something to sand it smooth after it’s dried. I’d recommend the screen type of sandpaper used for drywall mud, and a handle to attach it to.

      And if she hasn’t opened the self-stick tiles yet, have a look while you’re at Home Depot, they have something better than peel and stick tiles. It’s vinyl tiles or planks which stick to each other but not the floor. Good price, look good, easy to install.

      Yes, you would be able to tell if floors uneven. Put on a subfloor, and tile on top. Don’t bother wasting your time using etching compound, it won’t work and labour intensive.

      If it is less than 1/4 – 1/2 inch = ok.
      That is one of the big advantages of vinyl, the floor doesn’t have to be perfect. Anything bigger might show though.
