How can I keep my cat from sliding on my tile floors?

Two weeks ago, I adopted an 8 year old cat that was declawed as a kitten and he’s having a very hard time with our floors. When he’s trying to play, or get somewhere in a hurry, or when he does the "crazy-cat-zoom-all-over" thing, he slips and slides on the tile floors we have throughout the house and gets really freaked out (which sometimes leads to more running and more freaking out). We only have a few small rugs right now (saving up to buy bigger ones), and he mostly stays near those rugs. Short of two pairs of kitty Nikes, is there anything I can do?
