How do I get my tile floors looking good again?

We live in military housing. It’s a semi-new town house. The tile flooring in the kitchen and dining room is scratched and nasty. It looks like whoever lived there last waxed the floors while they were still dirty. I can scrub the floors for hours and they just never look clean. What can I do (preferably inexpensive) to take some of the scratches out of the tiles and just make them look better all together?

    Being scratched I assume you mean its a vinyl tile and not ceramic tile. Going on the assumption, I d kinda like to know what specific tile it is.Some VCT or vinyl composition tile, need to be buffed and polished on a semi regular basis. These are the type you find in a super market ..Now if you have a peal and stick type tile, these also need a "polish" or top coat on them so you are not walking directly on the surface of the vinyl. It may not be able to be saved if it has scratches, it may be to late. But try to help it by cleaning it real well and getting a vinyl "polish" that you can get at any flooring store or the flooring department of a big box store.These are just mop on applications and are easy to do Any flooring questions you can e mail me thru my avatar GL

    Try getting a Shark steam mop. My mother bought me one at the department store. Apparently they have infomercials on tv, too; I don’t know, we don’t get cable.

    I have four kids under eight and am on disability. I am also a single mother. I cannot "scrub the floors for hours" like you, so I needed something that kept them fresh with minimal work. The Shark works great. When I got it, my floors had about four years of build-up on them (sorry, but it’s true). Within one use they looked new. It also worked on my hardwood floors and in my tile shower.

    It just uses steam so it dries fast and doesn’t make the house smell like chemicals or vinegar.

    Try "Barkeeper’s Friend" clenser and a white nylon scrubbing pad. The clenser should be in your supermarket, right next to the Comet and Ajax. It’s very good at removing "minor" metal abrasions, and usually won’t affect the tile’s finish. After this, I would try using the clenser with a pumice stone (also in the cleaning aisle under the name "Pummie"). This is rougher than the white nylon and will probably scar a highly glossed tile, though a matte finish tile should still be okay
