Depending on your area, and the subcontractors/installers that are available, you should expect to spend $9-12 a square foot. This price would include the ceramic tile, hardi board (If it is being installed on a wood sub floor), thin set the set the tile, grout, and labor. Ceramic tiles are the cost effective way to go vs. natural stone, but you might be able to bargain shop. Installing tile at a diagonal pattern could increase the cost $1-2 more a square foot because it is more labor intensive because more cuts and there is more waste of material.
You an do it. It is not that hard; however, sometime, I wish I had hired someone. Pick a small job to start. The tools including knee pads was less than $100.00. Go to D.I.Y. network for information. I have done kitchen, counters and 2 bathrooms. Finished job was good and good feeling.
