need to repair a stone foundation that has bowed out causing the fl beams to pull away from the foundation?

just bought a old house and found this problem someone suggested filling the crawl space with stone than cement level with the floor joist making a foundation pad to support the 2 story addition that the stone walls are supporting .the crawl space is approx 10ft x20ft and 5ft deep with a dirt sub- floor .is this even a legitimate fix to the prob or is it a bad idea that will make things worse … thank s

      10′x20′ is relatively a small area, you might be able to do this if your committed and don’t mind hard work. Since you have a large crawl space, I would shore up existing floor system at the ends close to foundation wall- do it in 4-5′ sections. Remove bowed foundation and relay it in new mortar. Sounds like you might be able to re-use same stone if you can clean it up a bit.
      Work your way around the house. You still have the weight of the wall above so don’t remove much more than 4-5′ at a time.If you can I would get some 4′ chunks of 6" x6" punch a hole through foundation wall about every 4′ slide these 6" x6" timbers through these holes in foundation, crib them up at each end. Put these right under the bottom wall plates or under Mud sill. This would hold upper walls. Repair foundation between these beams, – pull beams out and go around the perimeter with same process. Come back and patch all the beam holes. It’s a lot of work, but it can be done.

      Its really hard to picture what you’re saying from the amount of detail you gave. And from what you said, filling the crawl space with stone would add a lateral load onto the foundation walls which would let them bow out even more and undermine the integrity of the whole structure. Further details would be needed for me to give you a propper answer since this is a delicate matter and you shouldn’t risk it.

      bad idea…jack weight off floor and tear out walls and re-lay stone or replace with blocks…you may need to pull the stud walls back to where they belong…
