  I would say pick a color that you love that pops.. green .. red.. purple.. somthing that will liven the room ..

  For the main items like carpets I would go for something light if your hardwoods are dark, just to give it a bit of contrast. Plus carpets tend to be more expensive, it’s best to chose something neutral that will not go out of fashion quickly when selecting the main pieces.

  So the walls are white and you have black photos if I understand this correctly, why not pick something with a punch of color for your drapes, you could double layer your shades, this is the best way. have a neutral sheer at the bottom layer for direct sunlight to protect your furniture and carpets, then chose something more dramatic in color that can help darken the room for watching movies or sleeping.

  Try and get end tables and entertainment center in matching shades. It does not have to be a set or match, in fact it often looks better when it is not a set, but just try to stay with a similar curve, style or color. have fun with it whatever you choose, your style is a reflection of yourself.
