What could I write about for a scene when the main character's in a prison?

It’s not like a normal time period either; the cells are made of stone and the floors are dirt, and the guards beat the prisoners a lot. You get my drift. I just don’t know what kind of things I should add to make it intresting.

      What’s the point of the scene?

      Every scene should be in your story for a reason – every scene must progress the plot, or at least build characterisation.

      What do you want this scene to achieve? If you don’t know that, and we don’t know that, we’re gonna get nowhere here…

      Mabey a flash back to his childhood, when he was happy.

      Try and focus on the character’s thoughts and feelings – how he feels about being locked up (depressed/angry/defeated etc) and maybe have a few ruminations on what he did to end up there – but be careful to avoid a complete info-dump of his full back story – rather than clumping it all into one black of text, spread it out throughout the scene and the story. Also, maybe have one of the guards torture him or another prisoner while the others laugh to show how cruel they are. Use it as a chance to establish some of the character’s personality and back story through his thoughts and the emotions he feels, especially if it’s near the start of the book.

      If you’re finding it impossible to come up with anything, it might be best to cut the scene entirely. If it doesn’t add to moving the plot along or developing a character it probably isn’t necessary and only slows up the pace of the story.

      You could write about how the prisoner goes for meal time and is excluded from everyone. or something like when the prisoner gets his activity time, for example getting to watch TV. an older prisoner makes him his "bitch" & takes his time or something along those lines. Hope i helped.
