What Direction Is It Best For An Orangery To Point?
When the sun comes out here in the UK, we like to enjoy it as much as we can as the sun our summers are very short and the sun rarely comes out. By adding conservatories or orangeries to your property, you give yourself the ability to make the most of the sun when it comes out, even if its a bit cool outside still.
After you have decided to add a conservatory to your property you need to decide WHERE you will add the conservatory to the property! A local conservatory designer will be able to give you advice on the best place to have the conservatory built, however using this guide below will give you some initial ideas.
As having an orangery on the front of your house creates a few privacy issues and is also the most difficult place to obtain planning permission for, it is no suprise that this is the least popular option. Terrace houses or those with a narrow garden to the side of the property are unable to take of the otherwise popular location of having the conservatory on the side of the property. Having a conservatory constructed on the rear of your house is by far the most popular and in most cases the best option. This then dictates which direction your conservatory will face. Before you order a conservatory or spend too long researching it, you may want to find out how this will effect the conservatory.
North Facing – Not ideal, north facing is the least popular option available. You will need to ensure that if you have a north facing conservatory you think about how the room will be heated and make sure that you have the best glazing, insulation and heating put in. Even then the chances are that the space will not be usable any time of the year other than during the summer.
South Facing – Obviously the opposite of the north facing conservatory. Receiving sun every day of the year, all day, this is the best option! Rather than heating the conservatory you will need to think about how you will keep it cool. Roof vents and windows will help with this, but you will also want to think about installing roof and side blinds.
East Facing – As a conservatory facing this direction will get the most sunshine during the morning it is best suited to early birds that will enjoy the sun in the morning.
West Facing – As with the east facing, this will only receive the sun for half of the day. In this case it is for the second half of the day.
Conservatory – If you think that your house may be unsuitable, but still would like a conservatory, please contact a local conservatory company who may be able to help you further.
