What do you think about travertine, marble, and limestone surfaces for decorating?

Basically, if you were to rank these choices in stone surfaces in order of which you’d prefer, what would that order be and why? What do each type of stone for tile, countertops, wall-cladding, or other surfaces communicate to you – practicality, look, atmosphere (luxury, affluence, budget surface, etc)? Tell me your opinions, homeowners!

      I have a marble bathroom floor. It was never sealed properly so it is stained. It’s also very hard and cold. It’s a beautiful floor, but just not practical.

      I have a large marble floor. It is cold, easily cracks if something big drops on it (which it did) and etches easily (had a party and someone left a wine glass on the floor now I have rings). For counter tops, I have granite. I really really like my counter tops. They look good and are relatively practical. Both of these choices however can be a bit on the pricey side. For flooring, I like travertine (although I just heard that travertine is going out of favor as compared to its popularity in the past couple of years). Does any of that help?

      It depends on where you are putting each stone. These stones are essentially the same, on a microscopic level. Each is soft and porous, allowing for the possibility of staining, so using them on countertops is not always the best application They offer a look of luxury, overall, but each has a slightly different feel. For example, a polished marble tends to look more formal and traditional than a honed limestone. Costs are similar, although it varies with the color of the stone.
