what should i do when my twin girls start to crawl and walk (tile floors)?

i have tile floors everywhere in my house except the bedrooms. i have a 8×10 foot rug for them to play on now, but i know that they will be getting around much better in the near future and will be able to get off of it onto the tile. i’m scared that it will hurt their knees when they crawl and i’m terrified they will fall when they start to walk. please give me some ideas on how i can keep them safe. thanks!

    We have hard wood floors in our house, I have rugs in each room, but they aren’t very padded. My sons done just fine on them. I don’t reccomend socks though, they can be very slippery. My son wears lots of footy jammies with the grip bottoms if his feet get cold. Socks, slippery floors, and beginner walking doesn’t go so well together.

    We though about getting one of the those foam play mat things, they connect together like a puzzle, and just keeping him mostly in one room with it, but we didn’t because he likes to explore the house too much. But with twins, it may be harder to let two explore the house constantly, perhaps get some of this padding if you are worried and designating a play room that you spend a lot of time in during the day.

    I’m was in the exact same boat as you. We built a new house and the ENTIRE house is ceramic tile, except for the master bedroom. And I was SOOOO freaked out when he started crawling that I went and bought like a ton of those ABC mats and covered the WHOLE living room floor with them (it looked ridiculous. Unfortunately we hav an open floor plan so he would just crawl right off of the mats, so we just put all the mats up and now he crawls on the floor. It doesn’t seem to bother him. If it did, we would def. find a way to make him more comfortable. Babies are so rezilant and things that would hurt us, just don’t seem to hurt them. And their knees become so calus when they are crawling that they don’t feel a thing. So don’t worry about it, my son is turning out fine and we actually wasted money on mats that made our living room look ridiculous and he just politely crawled right off of them..lol They’ll be fine.

    My 8 month old prefers to the kitchen floor because he gets better traction. It’ll be okay. Babies fall a lot when they start to walk. They may get bumps and bruises but every kid does.

    As an example when my little one first started crawling he had absolutely no depth Perceptionon. He crawled right in to the corner of the wall which left him with a "line" bruise on his forehead. Now he is pulling himself up on anything he can and has tumbled right over on a toy.

    Babies are resilientnt.

    Buy a piece of sponge and put it under the rug and make sure the rug is soft and thick so its not thin where if they fall, they don’t hurt their head.

    it will not hurt their knees. We have all ceramic tile and hardwood floors through out the entire house (due to allergy concerns). My son fell so many times as he learned to pull up and walk. He has survived and your girls will too. They learn quickly that it hurts to fall and they start catching themselves with their hands and such.

    We worried about the same thing – we have all hardwood and tile in the kitchen/bathroom. Initially Elyse was "afraid" to leave the area rug, something about the change made her just sit back down. Eventually she started leaving the rug but had trouble crawling because she would slip and slide around. A few times she banged her head but was just fine. Eventually, in about 2 weeks, she was crawling on the hardwood just fine and no more bumps. Now I wish I could contain her to a rug! lol!

    Just beware that you can’t protect them from everything, little bumps and bruises will happen – usually it scares you more then them! Their little knees have so much padding, they’ll be just fine.

    They will be fine. Children have crawled and fallen on floors for ever. You cannot protect them from everything.

    Or – you could have the entire house carpetted.

    I would just make sure theyre either barefoot (if its warm enough) or they have flexible shoes with rubber grips so they dont slip on the tiles. As for their knees, fleecy pants or corduroy are quite cushioning. But crawling actually doesnt normally bother them too much. I think its because they weigh so little at that point. I didnt have tile but I had hardwood floors and yes they do fall often, but they also are pretty resilient (thank God!) and they dont have that far to fall.

    They won’t hurt their knees. I would worry more about them getting rug burn or some disease from carpeting, even if you clean the carpet regularly. (Visitors bring in some pretty nasty stuff on their shoes and feet). At least with tile, you can sanitize it. When I was a baby, I was weird…I didn’t like my knees to touch the ground, so after a couple of weeks of moving around like that, I just began walking instead.
